Madera
If the history of Belgrade was to be told though buildings that could rightfully claim the title of “institutions of urban life”, the restaurant Madera would have a special chapter. Situated at the same location since 1937, Madera is an icon of this city, the residence of true bohemia and hedonism. Despite the changes time brought, as it always does, Madera preserved the typical Belgradian bohemian spirit, even though it was renovated into a modern incarnation in 2003. Guests of this restaurant are aware of its glorious past and those who sat in its chairs before them. Gastronomic indulgence of the highest rank is still a major part of the restaurant’s reputation. National cuisine enriched by original recipes of famous chefs is something without which “the flavour of Belgrade” wouldn’t be what it is. We must not forget wines, either, and the myth of the wines from the Portuguese island of Madeira hold a clue to the name of this special landmark on the map of Belgrade past and present.
Cafe-Gallery Autsajder
We remain in the chapter of iconic and symbolic. Right next to the cult pub “?” (Znak Pitanja, Question Mark) in equally cult street of Kralja Petra, opposite the Central Orthodox Cathedral, sat a cafe called Triangle, for decades. Today, under a different name, this special embodiment of Belgrade’s urban and casual vibe still attracts those of discerning taste, but many foreigners, as well. In a rustic two-storied space, the cafe-gallery Autsajder (Outsider) organizes exhibitions of contemporary artists, primarily painters, jazz gigs of foreign and domestic musicians and rock’n’roll parties. At that, they serve excellent coffee, original cocktails and drinks from all over the world. Autsajder is the spirit of the rebellious, artistic Belgrade of the nineteen-eighties, thriving in contemporary times.
TC Ušće: The square of fun
The Square of Fun in front of the Shopping Center Ušće has been the source of winter magic for years now. It suits the tastes of both kids and adults. There are numerous options to have fun that make it what it is: the entertainment center, huts with hot beverages and winter treats… and all this with a lot of music, most beautiful winter decorations, famous actors reading fairy tales to children, fictional characters in costume that bring a lot of joy. The square of fun has been tailored to the needs of a global metropolis and fully embodies what is called “the New Year’s Magic”. Of course, the kids like it best as it is filled with joy and cheerful activities.
