Ostoja Mijajlović, General Manager at British Motors and President of Partizan Basketball Club reveals the principles of his business philosophy that turned out to be more than successful in different fields
Ostoja Mijailović talks about development perspectives of British Motors, about electric cars that are the future of the auto industry, but also about plans for the new season of Partizan Basketball Club that aims to create its new history.
From season to season British Motors is achieving significant successes in this market. Still, is the electric Jaguar one of the biggest challenges so far?
Electric cars are being a challenge for the entire auto industry. They’ve been trying to take their place on the market for years. This year they have experienced an expansion since the oil industry creates certain barriers for vehicles using diesel and petrol fuels. But one thing is indisputable. Electric cars are the future of this industry. I recently spoke with the representatives of the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia to intensify investments in this domain. Primarily I think about electric chargers because infrastructure is the most important for the success of this type of car. This has to be done at European level because all car dealerships that have electric vehicles are required to meet standards prescribed for this type of vehicle. Therefore, Serbia as a country has to start building car chargers.
Car electrification is an innovative process that will, in a positive sense, be reflected in many aspects of life. How many people from this region are familiar with this? Is there a big interest in this type of model?
Yes, the interest is great. People love electric cars, primarily because of their economy. On the other hand, ecological awareness is also very developed. Our people are conscientious and they see the clear advantages of electric cars comparing to standard types of vehicles, especially diesel engines. I want to underline that there is awareness about this, but I am returning to infrastructure as a basic precondition for the buyer from this region to opt for an electric car. What is very important is that countries in this region have worked a lot on subsidies for electric cars. Serbia must also implement this incentive for both electric and hybrid vehicles.
How do you pick a car for yourself? What qualities and performance do you insist on?
Comfort and light-colored interior are important to me. In the past few years, I choose Range Rover cars for traveling, but for city driving, I prefer convertible vehicles. Especially in the summer period.
On the other hand, what kind of sports autumn awaits „Partizan”?
This season has just ended. We will not make a break, we will not rest. We continue to work on a transitional period. The transition to Arena raised the level of organization. We are improving everything we have been doing for the past two years. We will invest a lot in the first team. We want results and trophies.
What will you set as priorities in the next sports season?
Trophies are our goal. Creating a new history.
How important is sport to your life, especially when considering the complexity of the positions you take? Do you have time to dedicate yourself to it?
Sport is important for a country, for social life. It has a very prominent position in all of this. When I entered the sport, things have changed because I have applied numerous business experiences on a brand new ground. And it’s recognized. The sport requires work and dedication, especially when you run national teams. There is a great presence of the audience, media interest is huge. Every word and every move is under watch.
Are you susceptible to stress? How to overcome it?
It all depends on how you perceive things. You must be prepared for challenges and problems. In this way, you bring yourself to standby for different situations and put stress under control. Disappointment is always as same as expected and it’s one of the biggest causes of stress. I never expect anything in advance, that’s why I’m rarely disappointed, that’s how I completely control my stress.
What is your attitude towards the future? Are planning and developing strategies being the basis of good preparation and far-sightedness in business?
Setting goals and finding the most painful way to reach them is the most important thing in life. All those who want to become managers and leaders must spread their horizons if they want to make progress in their lives. We create our own tomorrow. We have to look over the horizon, not only work from day to day.
How much is a personal style important for the impression that a businessman leaves about himself, for example, dressing?
It’s very important to me. From my early childhood, I took care of clothing and I followed trends. It’s important for me to feel good in the clothes I wear. I think that people who are dealing with public work and who are in constant communication with others need to respect certain standards in dressing because in this way they are also representing themselves. It’s nice to see when someone has a style and dressing well.
How do you estimate people?
What kind of colleagues do you value?
Working and honest ones.
What are the principles of your business philosophy?
Set realistic goals to avoid disappointment and execute them in a more accurate way. Get as many friends as possible, and as fewer enemies as possible. Time runs fast, there are few good people in business, they go very fast and therefore it’s important to always have a wider picture in front of ourselves.
