Just stepped out of the war and sanctions, grabbing to catch up with the world that got start of it again, 11 years ago, Belgrade got the first “niche” perfumery. Opened with a lot of enthusiasm and passion and a bit of anxiety: will the city recognize the beauty of scents and cosmetics that do not bear the easily recognizable names of big brands?
The anxiety was unnecessary: Belgrade was hurrying to become “the world” by always shamelessly measuring only with Paris, London and Rome, these metropolises of Ideas, Progress and Beauty. Metropolitan was a strait hit.
Soon after the discovery of a small, intimate perfumery near the pedestrian metropolitan area, with sellers who had the time, will and knowledge to talk about beauty and trends, buyers embraced Metropolitan.
After five years, small “niche” perfumery had to expand.
Metropolitan gained a bigger space in the middle of Dorćol, which slowly became the center of new city tendencies, but continued to care for its highest value: time dedicated to customers.
The foreigners discovered the Metropolitan and wrote about it, and the Metropolitan opened the door to local designers for cooperation by exhibiting their works. With the arrival of cult “molecules” (Eccentric Molecules), the first waiting list was formed. This tendency was confirmed by Nasomatto with his strange and resistive Black Afgano perfume, followed by Byredo.
It was time for the Metropolitan to expand. It’s been six years. In the same location, renovation began with extensive works that could give the space a new designer form. Architect Maria Palanački insisted on every detail, every shelf, lamp and chair – fitting them into the vision of a new space.
With great exhibiting windows that face two streets, the Metropolitan inevitably absorbed Dorćol’s passers-by into its story, into a space organized as a large apartment: a “living room” with a sofa for rest and scented candles, a “kitchen” whose refrigerator was cooling the bottles of selected perfumes, “boudoir” with selected cosmetics.
As Metropolitan became bigger and more beautiful, and new brands arrived, customers became more demanding.
The time has come for Metropolitan to expand and move – from Dorćol to Vračar.
At the place where the streets are full of noisy, popular cafes, elegant façades of old buildings seriously looking at us, lordly houses: Njegoševa Street.
Two old city quarters in a constant race for prestige: who will be more beautiful, avant-garde, relaxed or more interesting … now have a point that connects them – Metropolitan.
“Metropolitan” has adapted the design of its new perfumery to the spirit of the Vračar, its contrasts, stylish, old facades, avenues and noisy cafes. Completely different from the Dorćol place, this one offers peace from the city turbulence with its reduced lines, dark colors and contemporary elegance of brass, wood and concrete. A place in which the choice of perfumes will become more than buying: it will be a new, interesting content of Vračar’s life.
